Twitter has come in for some mixed press, but at last it seems to be finding its uses, other than informing ‘followers’ that you are stuck in a lift or have eaten something. 200 cities around the world, from Calgary to Bangalore, took part in the Twestival in order to raise money for charity.

Twitter users came together around the world to raise money for local charities – and it was a chance for Twitter users to actually meet their followers, and those that they follow, in person.

At each event, a giant screen was erected pulling through all ‘tweets’ that were labelled @Twestival. Fellow geeks stared at the screen watching their own tweets appear, knowing that they would be appearing in over 200 countries around the world, at similar events.

The Vancouver event donated towards the BC Hospital, while events across India all equally went to local causes.

We say: Thank God the ‘social’ internet has found a use other than telling people you don’t even know what you ate for breakfast. If this is the future of the web, then we’re all for it.
