Are you struggling to find that perfect gift for your Dad this Father’s Day? Then look no further than Concern’s brilliant Gifts website. We’ve got a range of fun and quirky presents for every taste and budget and each one makes a truly lasting difference to the poorest of the poor.

BBQ kings will love our fuel efficient stove at £18. These brilliant little devices make the world of difference to women in Darfur who use them to keep warm and cook meals for their families.

For Dads who love gardening, just £28 could buy one vegetable pack with seeds, insecticides, fertilizer and a small sprayer – everything someone needs to grow vegetables on a small plot. The crops that are grown can be eaten or sold to pay for essential items like school fees or medical bills.

And for Dads who love technology, £48 could buy a mobile phone and solar powered charger. We use these to transfer emergency cash grants to people during an emergency – and we’re making use of this groundbreaking technology right now in Niger where a food crisis is affecting thousands of people.

Each gift comes with a beautiful card you can personalise and send to your Dad to make the day extra special.

So whatever your Dad’s into, you’ll find something perfect for him at Concern Gifts.

The image on the right tells you all you need to know. 1 in 4 people have mental health problems in the UK, which is an astonishing statistic.

The Mental Health Foundation raises awareness of this issue, and fights to help people with mental health problems.

They reach millions of people every year through their work with the media to encourage a better understanding of mental illness

Over 2.5 million people who need their help visit this website. It is the most comprehensive source of mental health information in Europe

They send out more than 100,000 advice booklets helping people who are experiencing mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and self-harm.

The need is urgent. So – your options are a) a £20 gift or b) a monthly direct debit donation, of any size. It’s up to you.

Ryanair prides itself on being the no-frills airline – and its new 2010 calendar shows that its cabin crew are short on frillies. However, before we get any cheap Ryanair digs in, it must be underlined that this calendar is for charity – notably the very worthy charity KIDS.

KIDS UK helps children and families deal with disability around the country, and will stand to make £100,000, for the third year in a row, thanks to Ryanair.

Michael O’Leary has actually bought the first 100 copies of the calendar, and even sent one to a Labour MP who claimed that Ryanair were taking advantage of their cabin crew.

It turns out that the cabin crew were all desperate to appear in the calendar – 800 of them actually applied! Here are just a few of the lucky winners – and you can grab yours online for a tenner, which is about the same price as a sandwich. We did, after all, promise a Ryanair dig.

We say: It’s a strange way to give money to a KIDS charity, isn’t it? Half-naked women and all that. Not that we, as adults, mind, but it’s a peculiar choice. And while we’re on it – travelling by Ryanair really is like sitting in a luminous yellow box with loudspeakers playing adverts about orange juice and lotto tickets while someone pokes you with a £10 sandwich. But I forgot to mention, it’s cheap. Sorry O’Leary.

A new charity has claimed that “mock muggings” should be staged across Britain in order to deal with the country’s “walk on by” culture.

The charity, Witness Confident, reports that a person is attacked by a stranger every minute. With violent crime allegedly on the rise in Britain, the charity’s aim is to stop people from ignoring crimes on the street, and to encourage victims of violent crime to come forward.

The group claims that witnesses are so scared of reprisals, they are unwilling to become involved – especially with the amount of knife crime in the country.

A recent Home Office report revealed that there were 852,000 violent attacks last year, but only 43% were reported to the police, either by the victim or by a bystander. This figure, says the charity, doesn’t even include robberies.

The charity goes on to say that “with a recent internal report from Scotland Yard revealing that only one in a thousand CCTV cameras will help convict a criminal each year, this rising tide of street violence can only be turned by engaging the public when they witness these attacks.”

We say: Getting involved is a risk as much to the person being attacked as to the bystander who gets involved. However, we have to define “getting involved”. It does not necessarily mean wading in trying to be a hero and save the person being attacked by physical means. It could just be taking a photo of the attacker from a distance or making a noise that would scare off the attacker. The crux of this report, though, is that violent crime exists and is not being tackled – protection of witnesses and bystanders is paramount to solving this problem. Mock Muggings probably won’t help.

Government and local councils are set to slash spending across the voluntary sectors.

Charity leaders have warned against the cuts which could signal disaster for many charities struggling to survive. The NCVO is set to publish a report on state funding of the sector which will reveal that those charities earning less than £1m per year are most dependent on the state for contracts. Indeed, charity spend is regional, with the North East, East Midlands and Wales most reliant on state contracts.

If the government were to slash spending, 25,000 groups could see 3/4 of their income disappear.

We say: Recession or no recession, this is a relatively rich country and the state can afford to give to charity. Spending cuts from the voluntary sector would have a severe knock-on effect that would damage many of the government’s own initiatives, which rely on the productivity and the generosity of the charities themselves, with people working around the clock, often unpaid. Make cuts now, and pay later. This is just plain stupid.
