KIDS UK helps children and families deal with disability around the country, and will stand to make £100,000, for the third year in a row, thanks to Ryanair.

Michael O’Leary has actually bought the first 100 copies of the calendar, and even sent one to a Labour MP who claimed that Ryanair were taking advantage of their cabin crew.

It turns out that the cabin crew were all desperate to appear in the calendar – 800 of them actually applied! Here are just a few of the lucky winners – and you can grab yours online for a tenner, which is about the same price as a sandwich. We did, after all, promise a Ryanair dig.

We say: It’s a strange way to give money to a KIDS charity, isn’t it? Half-naked women and all that. Not that we, as adults, mind, but it’s a peculiar choice. And while we’re on it – travelling by Ryanair really is like sitting in a luminous yellow box with loudspeakers playing adverts about orange juice and lotto tickets while someone pokes you with a £10 sandwich. But I forgot to mention, it’s cheap. Sorry O’Leary.

The charity, Witness Confident, reports that a person is attacked by a stranger every minute. With violent crime allegedly on the rise in Britain, the charity’s aim is to stop people from ignoring crimes on the street, and to encourage victims of violent crime to come forward.

The group claims that witnesses are so scared of reprisals, they are unwilling to become involved – especially with the amount of knife crime in the country.

A recent Home Office report revealed that there were 852,000 violent attacks last year, but only 43% were reported to the police, either by the victim or by a bystander. This figure, says the charity, doesn’t even include robberies.

The charity goes on to say that “with a recent internal report from Scotland Yard revealing that only one in a thousand CCTV cameras will help convict a criminal each year, this rising tide of street violence can only be turned by engaging the public when they witness these attacks.”

We say: Getting involved is a risk as much to the person being attacked as to the bystander who gets involved. However, we have to define “getting involved”. It does not necessarily mean wading in trying to be a hero and save the person being attacked by physical means. It could just be taking a photo of the attacker from a distance or making a noise that would scare off the attacker. The crux of this report, though, is that violent crime exists and is not being tackled – protection of witnesses and bystanders is paramount to solving this problem. Mock Muggings probably won’t help.

Charity leaders have warned against the cuts which could signal disaster for many charities struggling to survive. The NCVO is set to publish a report on state funding of the sector which will reveal that those charities earning less than £1m per year are most dependent on the state for contracts. Indeed, charity spend is regional, with the North East, East Midlands and Wales most reliant on state contracts.

If the government were to slash spending, 25,000 groups could see 3/4 of their income disappear.

We say: Recession or no recession, this is a relatively rich country and the state can afford to give to charity. Spending cuts from the voluntary sector would have a severe knock-on effect that would damage many of the government’s own initiatives, which rely on the productivity and the generosity of the charities themselves, with people working around the clock, often unpaid. Make cuts now, and pay later. This is just plain stupid.
