Elton John flogs clothes for charity

13 December 2009 No Comment

Elton John and his partner David Furnish have sold off a huge array of designer clothing for the Elton John Aids Foundation. The sale, nattily called The Out of the Closet Sale 2009 saw items sold from £10 to £2000, and it was Versace that saw prices rocket the most.

The sale took place in London’s Covent Garden, and fans were queuing up overnight in the hope that they would snap something up. According to reports, the fans were so devoted to Elton John they knew his size and his partner’s before going.

Many spent thousands of pounds, but certain items were sold through sealed bids. The shop will stay open for a week, and is being restocked daily. The foundation is creating a number of pop-up shops: shops that seem to “pop up” overnight and can be taken down with the minimum of fuss.

A similar sale four years ago raised £700,000.

We say: Celebrities generally make us vomit, and what is especially distasteful is that they have actually spent this money on clothes already when most of us get by on a couple of pairs of jeans. That’s not to say they’re not allowed to spend all of their money on whatever they want to spend it on, but there’s a level of taste to consider.

However, cynicism aside, at least their little jumble sale is raising money for a very good cause – although the question has to be asked: do any of the buyers really know this is for charity?

As I said – cynicism aside… a good cause, a lot of money, we really should not complain. Very good, and we hope that all those people with more money than sense (especially fashion sense) turn up and hand over wads of the stuff.
